Glow

What is Glow?

Glow is a national schools intranet, digitally linking Scotland's 800,000 educators and pupils. Glow is funded by the Scottish Government and managed by Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) in partnership with RM.

Teachers and learners are at the heart of Glow.

  • Glow is designed with one aim - to support educational development.
  • Glow is for everyone - giving us powerful online tools to work together safely and securely, at any location or time.
  • Glow is a new way to get people excited about learning.

The big picture

Glow is just one of the many changes taking place in Scottish education. We are working with others to build capacity, deliver A Curriculum for Excellence and ensure first-class education for Scotland.

Glow will transform the way education is delivered in Scotland - with educational ambition and technology working together.

Inspiring

Glow uses engaging technologies - designed to get young people excited about learning.

Services provided free for all schools

  • Secure and personalised access
  • Virtual learning, including virtual whiteboards to share information across many schools taking part in one lesson; the system includes tools access and the ability to manipulate and present content
  • Tools to enable you to collaborate, cooperate and communicate across the network
  • Technical helpdesk and training support

Add-on services local authorities and other stakeholder organisations can buy

The contracted supplier, RM, will offer paid-for extra services:

  • local intranet service: this allows local authorities to build a secure website to hold information on almost any topic - from absence procedures to continuing professional development (CPD) programmes
  • co-location: this allows partners or external suppliers to locate their servers directly on the Interconnect, improving efficiency
  • local helpdesks: local authorities can outsource their helpdesk services.

Glow is supported by the following technologies:

The Interconnect

This is the broadband network which connects education in Scotland. It includes all 32 education authorities and other key stakeholders – such as the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS).

The Content delivery infrastructure (CDI)

This is the network which will deliver media-rich learning resources (such as video clips and software) across the country - when and where you want them.
